Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (1)
Neon Abyss is a roguelike developed by Veewo Games and published by Team17 and Yooreka Studio. Roguelikes are games made with the player's intention to play through multiple "runs" of the same levels to unlock new items, characters, game mechanics, bosses, etc. These levels are usually randomly generated such that no two "runs" of the game are the same, and Neon Abyssisno different in this regard. Progress is achieved inNeon Abyssby playing the game and defeating bosses and managers (harder bosses) to unlock harder managers to fight to progress the "story" and to earnFaith Gems. These Faith Gems are then used in the Skill Tree to unlock new tools that can help the player in future runs through the game.

Upon first starting the game, you are greeted with a short cutscene and then a short tutorial that will cover the main basics of the game such as controls, weapons, items, and bosses, to name a few. However, there are many aspects of Neon Abyss that are not explicitly told to you and many of these things are extremely useful for unlocking certain trophies and becoming better at the game in general. Below are sections explaining some of these aspects.

Directly below are two resources that can prove to be extremely helpful in navigating the dense world of Neon Abyss.

Neon Explorer:

A search tool for all Neon Abyss items and weapons that include their item descriptions, something often not revealed to the player until after picking up said item. This tool is nice as you can search for items individually or based on keywords such as "Flight" showing only the items related to flight.

Neon Abyss Wiki:

Due in large part to this game's Large PC player base, Neon Abyss has its own Wiki that features detailed information on anything from Bosses and Monsters/Enemies to the types of Objects and Consumables found in the Abyss. The only downside is the Wiki itself is updated to match with the PC version which is currently two updates ahead of the PS4 version, meaning that some information relates to things not yet included in the PS4 version.

The Skill Tree is your main way of progressing through the game and unlocking new items, room types, game aspects, and characters. Upon finishing a run through the abyss or dying in a run through the abyss, you are brought back to the Cerberus Bar and, more importantly, to the Skill Tree Screen.

Every unlockable in the Skill Tree requires a certain number of Faith Gems, which are earned by defeating bosses, to be spent to unlock it. The Skill Tree is divided into six sections. You will only have access to one section at the start, but more sections can be unlocked using a certain number of faith gems for unlocks across all sections. In each section, there are four different types of unlocks available to be purchased.

Item packs

Unlocking an item pack will unlock the shown item, allowing it to be found in the Abyss for all future runs. This will also grant the player a free trial of the item in the next run, sometimes with an additional bonus item to boot. If multiple Item packs are unlocked at once, the player will only get a free trial of the most recent item pack unlocked, so it is best advised after unlocking an item pack that you utilize the free trial and start a run through the abyss. Additionally, after unlocking an item pack, by hovering over the item pack in the skill tree, you can hold Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (2)to spend25 Faith Gemsto get the chosen Item packs as a "free" trial for the next run.

Characters

Each of the six sections of the Skill Tree will offer one playable character unlock. Each character costs10 Faith Gemsto be unlocked, however, depending on the section, other unlocks may need to be unlocked first before you can unlock the character. For a more detailed rundown of the characters and to find out the approximate number of gems need to unlock them and their sections of the skill tree, please see Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (3)Grim Squad.

Special Rooms

Special room unlocks unlock new room types that are added into the map/floor generation inside the Abyss. Most of these rooms are minigames where the player can spend coins to play the game and potentially win items. Many of these unlockables are not required for the Platinum except for two; the Piano Special Room and the Fishing Special Room needed to unlock Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (4)Piano Virtuoso and Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (5)Fishing Joy respectively. Additionally, if you have unlocked a special room but found out later that you don't like it, you can go back to where you unlocked it in the Skill Tree and hold Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (6)to disable its spawn in the map/floor generation. You will know if this was done properly if the icon is darker than normal.

Game Rules

Game rule unlocks add/alter core aspects of the game. For example, the Bomb Counter game rule unlockable found in section 2 introduces Smirk Co. Traders into the game in the form of the Bomb Smirk Co. Trader who trades bombs for other consumables or items. Like Special Rooms, any game rule you don't like can be disabled by going back to where you unlocked it in the skill tree and holding Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (7)to disable it. You will know if this was done properly if the icon is darker than normal.

The Wisdom/Violence Meter mechanic is a feature that one could go through numerous runs without even noticing and even longer before understanding how it works.

The Wisdom Meter and Violence Meter are two sides of the same coin, and in short, can be seen as a way to gain additional items by playing with a certain playstyle. These meters are also heavily related to two trophiesNeon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (8)Stay CalmandNeon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (9)Seek The Truthand are also partially explained there.

The Violence Meter appears and can be filled by performing some of the tasks listed below:

  • Shooting Crystal Devices, turning them into Spike Devices. The player can then walk into them taking half a heart of damage (full heart on floors 5 and above) to further fill the bar.
  • Shooting Crystal Doors, turning them into Spike Doors. The player can then walk into them taking half a heart of damage (full heart on floors 5 and above) to further fill the bar as well as open the door.
  • Shooting Crystal Chests, turning them into Spike Chests. The player can then walk into them taking half a heart of damage (full heart on floors 5 and above) to further fill the bar as well as open the chest.
  • Taking damage in any combat room after one of the three things above has been done.

The Wisdom Meter appears and can be filled by performing some of the tasks listed below:

  • Using a single crystal on a Crystal Device.
  • Using two crystals to open a Crystal Chest.
  • Using three crystals to open a Crystal Door.
  • Clearing any combat room or boss room without taking any damage.

It is important to know that you cannot fill both meters up at once. Upon filling one of the meters, you are given access to a secret temple accessed through the portal stones. Where in the case of the Violence Meter you can trade a heart container for a choice of one of three powerful items (can be upgraded in the skill tree to a one of five items choice) and in the case of the Wisdom Meter you are given a choice of one of two powerful items.

Utilizing these temples and the items they can provide is key in getting better at the game and in turn making many trophies both achievable and easier to achieve.

The following two features of Neon Abyss are so obscure that you could probably platinum the game without knowing of their existence. Within the Cerberus Bar is an elevator that the player can walk up to and press Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (10)to travel to one of three places, The Office, The Basement, andThe Lab.As of the most current update on PS4, The Office has no function, however, The Basement and The Lab each offer a feature that can make earning many trophies much easier and make casual runs of the game very fun and absurd.

The Basement

The Basement features a large long room that shows all of the items, weapons, and pets available in the game. It will also show all the items, weapons, and pets the player has obtained throughout all of their runs through the abyss. The items, weapons, and pets the player has obtained are illuminated instead of being greyed out.

Once an item weapon or pet has been unlocked, the player can test it out within the confines of The Basement, allowing the player to try out certain item combinations and builds. In addition, the player can also choose to Banthe item, weapon, or pet making it no longer appear within the abyss. Unfortunately, you can only ban up to 5 items, weapons, or pets that you have previously acquired without disabling trophies unlocking. However, the 5 bans can still prove very useful in making a run or trophy easier when used properly.

The Lab

The Lab features another large room that shows all of the enemies featured within the game. It will also show all the enemies that the player has defeated across all runs through the abyss. The enemies the player has defeated are illuminated in purple instead of being "greyed" out.

Once a monster has been defeated, the player has the option to change that monster into any other monster that the player has defeated, removing that enemy from your runs through the abyss and replacing it with the one you chose. Unfortunately, you can only do this to two enemies without disabling trophies, but this is still extremely useful if there are one or two enemies you despise fighting in the abyss.

On a slightly less related note, this can also be abused in a casual run to make for some very funny runs such as a run where only worms spawn.

Difficulty Mechanics:

When you first start the game and play through the tutorial, the game's difficulty is set to normal. In short, Neon Abyss has four major difficulty settings, Easy,Normal, Hard, and the secretAbyssal(see Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (11)The Real Game for more information). The difficulty can be set by going to the Cerberus Bar and walking over past the elevator to the Neon Head and pressing Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (12).

Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (13)

However for each difficulty except for Abyssal, there exist five sub difficulties. These sub difficulties are indicated by dots above the Neon Head within the Cerberus Bar. With each dot added above the Neon Head, the difficulty slightly increases but will never surpass the difficulty of the next major difficulty. (Eg. Easy with 4 dots above is still easier than Normal with a single dot) Dots are added above the Neon Heads by winning runs (i.e when you enter the portal and get met with the "your consciousness begins to fade" screen). For every run you win, you gain a dot and for every run, you die in, you lose a dot. The maximum number of dots is always five and the minimum is always one.

Now onto what really matters, which is: what does changing the difficulty change about the game?

For every increase in difficulty and sub-difficulty, the following occurs:

  • Enemy health will be increased, this includes bosses and managers.
  • Enemy, boss and manager movements will be faster.
  • The attack speed/rate of attack for enemies, base, and managers is increased.
  • Harder to fight/stronger enemies will appear on earlier floors than they would on easier difficulties (so an enemy you'd see on floor 5 now might appear on floor 4 - major difficulty increases only).
  • The number of Faith Gems dropped by managers, predominantly Aresand Athena;does not affect normal bosses.

The last point is what is very important and is the key to the gem farming method explained below.

Faith Gem Farming:

Faith Gems are the lifeblood of Neon Abyss and are crucial in progressing through both the game and its trophies. As mentioned above, Faith Gems are used in the Skill Tree to unlock new items, characters, room types, and game rules. The number of gems needed to unlock all parts of the Skill Tree reaches close to 500, which is insane, so knowing how to optimize how many Faith Gems you can earn in the quickest amount of time is key.

That being said there are three "camps", so to speak, for farming Faith Gems.

Camp 1: Hard Difficulty Farming:

As mentioned above, managers will drop higher numbers of Faith Gems upon defeating them by playing on harder difficulties. On hard difficulty, managers such as Argus, HAL,andZeusdrop two Faith Gems, meanwhile, managers like Aresand Athenadrop anywhere from 15-20Faith Gems upon their defeat depending on how many dots above the icon they have. Meaning on a full run from floor 1 to floor 8 a player can get up to a maximum of 30Faith Gems a run.

However, the issue of this method is that hard difficulty is not an easy difficulty and most of the payout comes from managing to defeat AresorAthena.Doing this will often take a lot of luck and a lot of skill. Alternatively, you can utilize the Item banning system and Monster Banning System described above and cater your run to be extremely broken and easy to finish. However, doing this will disable you to make any progress towards the more grindy trophies well as earn any trophies in general. In short, this strategy is a very high-risk high-reward method of farming.

Camp 2: Your Best Difficulty Method

The premise for this method of farming is simple. Play on the hardest difficulty that you can consistently beat Aresor Athenasince no matter what difficulty you play on, the majority of your Faith Gems come from being able to defeat Aresor Athena. In the long run, this farming method tries to maximize your Faith Gems by sacrificing some in the short run, so you can only consistently beat Aresor Athenaon normal with one dot. The argument is that the lower number of Faith Gems you would gain every run (which for this example is approximately 15) is better than the 30Faith Gems you get from the hard difficulty method every few runs.

Camp 3: Save "Scum" Method

Disclaimer: The method explained below could be considered by some to be exploitative, if you are the type of trophy hunter who does not like to earn trophies through exploitative means DO NOT reveal the spoiler tag.

Credit to YairGOW for finding this method.

The following method exploits Neon Abyss's Save and Quit feature found in the options menu that typically saves your progress at the start of every floor. However, this is not true for Global stats such as Faith Gems. Knowing this you can Kill Athena or Ares, pick up all the Faith Gems they drop but instead of entering the portal simply pause the game with Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (14)and press Neon Abyss Trophy Guide • PSNProfiles.com (15)and scroll down to and select the save and quit option. From here you can continue your run from the start of floor 8 while still having all the Faith Gems you acquired before saving and Quitting. After which you simply rinse and repeat until you have enough Faith Gems.

It is advised to Play on the hardest difficulty that you can consistently beat Ares or Athena however if you truly want to maximize the number of faith gems you get whilst minimizing the time it takes to grind for the faith gems you should use this method in conjunction whilst going for Ultimate Challenge trophy. This way for each defeat of Athena you get approximately 21 Faith Gems.
